Yakusugi is a precious material as logging is currently prohibited, and only wood from fallen trees due to typhoons or other natural causes is permitted to be collected. The Fudo Mantra consists of 23 Sanskrit characters and is chanted when praying to Fudo Myoo. The mystical Yakusugi, believed to house divine spirits, is meticulously carved with the Fudo Mantra, and the central head bead is inscribed with the Sanskrit character for Fudo Myoo, allowing the wearer to keep the blessings close at hand. The central location of Shingon Shu is Mount Koya in Wakayama Prefecture. Many followers undertake this pilgrimage seeking spiritual purification and enlightenment. Shingon Shu is known for its profound teachings and practices, making it one of the long-standing Buddhist sects in Japan. Shingon Buddhist prayer beads typically have 108 beads representing the 108 earthly desires. They often have two additional beads called "parent beads" that mark the end of the loop.
