The core teaching of Jodo Shu is the faith in Amida Buddha and the chanting of the nembutsu. Followers chant "Namu Amida Butsu" with the aspiration to be reborn in Amida Buddha’s Pure Land. Jodo Shu is widely accepted in Japan and is one of the major Buddhist sects with a large number of followers. Jodo Buddhist prayer beads generally consist of 108 beads, representing the 108 earthly desires. They often include additional small beads at regular intervals, which are used to help count repetitions of the Nembutsu chant ("Namu Amida Butsu").
